Ignorance is Not Bliss - It's Actually Glen Beck and Sarah Palin

Unfortunately Glen Beck and Sarah Palin represent a portion of the American mindset, generally the uninformed, ignorant and easily led mindset, but a portion of the mindset anyway.

Those Americans who believe Sarah Palin is anything but an opportunistic, jingoistic, cheerleader are deluded by her words and not paying attention.

Those Americans who believe Glen Beck cares for this country or them are deluded by his words and not paying attention.

America wake up. Pay attention to the dangers offered by a media conglomerate that sells propaganda and promotes those who promote the propaganda. Glenn Beck, Sarah Palin and Fox News represent what is wrong in America. They represent the arrogance, the ignorance and the lack of awareness of reality - not a perceived, made up, only in their mind reality, but the reality that exists.

The worse part is they sell that reality to others who accept it when it isn't true.

Here are more examples of how their rhetoric hurts America and Americans.

Isn't it time to turn them off and engage in real dialogue with people who, as Jiminy Cricket told us, can think, reason and read?

Progressives are a Sensitive Group

I've been listening to local progressive radio. As a progressive and an emotional fire-filled person I understand disappointment and failed expectations. What I don't grasp is the progressives need to throw President Obama under the bus for every failed expectation.

We (meaning progressives) seem to expect the election of Obama was a magical epiphany and he would be able to fix all that ails us and this country in this first year. The problems we're facing took many, many years to come to this point. To fix these problems we need solid, long-term statesmanship.

Progressives need to develop a long term view. In addition, we need to have patience, continue to work on the issues that concern us but not give up because we didn't get what we wanted. Voting is not an action that shows commitment. Working consistently for what we want is the "action".

It's time for progressives to grow up. The anger needs to be action. Positive action. Positive action in a direction for an issue that is important to us. Let's stop complaining, let's keep taking action in a direction that moves us and our country in a balanced direction. A direction that extends our liberties and rights to all.

We can be disappointed. We can expect more. We can continue to work on the progressive agenda. We just can not abandon through anger and vitriolic phrases what we believe in, and our elected officials because we didn't get today everything our impatient progressive egos want.

Fighting Back for the Public Option

The satirical grass-roots group Billionaires for Wealthcare staged a protest for the Public Option at the Washington, DC conference of the powerful America Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) organization. The conference was held 21-23 October, and this protest was conducted on the last day of the conference.

The group demonstrated you can protest with courtesy, humor and have your point heard without being loud, obnoxious and ignorant (Tea Baggers take note).

Fear Was No Excuse...and Still Isn't!

In recent years we've often defined leadership as following the group think. Going along with a particular ideology is considered leadership, versus believing in principles that are shown, demonstrated or proven by facts.

Our national dialogue is also driven by a media that does not discern fact from fiction and will often assist to keep the spin spinning. Our saddest excuse for an information and news network is Fox which presents pre-scripted talking points to it's hosts who spend the entire day repeating the same half-truths and untruths all day followed by night time hosts who lie. They represent the worst of the propaganda machines.

However, there are still those in the United States who are willing to share an informed opinion that runs counter to the spin machine, and who are not afraid of the spin machine. Recently General Charles C. Krulak (Retired), former commandant of the Marine Corps from 1995 to 1999, and General Joseph P. Hoar (Retired), former commander in chief of U.S. Central Command from 1991 to 1994 both spoke out about the continued un-truths that are propagated by form Vice President Dick Cheney. Their joint article in the Miami Herald expresses leadership, wisdom from a career in Service and professional knowledge.

General Charles C. Krulak and General Joseph P. Hoar have this to say:

"In the fear that followed 9/11, Americans were told that defeating Al Qaeda would require us to “take off the gloves.” As a former Commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps and a retired Commander-in-Chief of U.S. Central Command, we knew that was a recipe for disaster. But we never imagined that we would feel duty-bound to publicly denounce a Vice President of the United States, a man who has served our country for many years. In light of the irresponsible statements recently made by former Vice President Dick Cheney, however, we feel we must repudiate his dangerous ideas – and his scare tactics."

The Religious Right is Neither Religious or Right!!

In this age of fast moving information increasingly we find that we are being bombarded with false information being fed as facts.

Starting back with the loss of the 1992 Presidential election, the Republican party has advanced the politics of personal assassination and the obfuscation of truth for fairy tale. They've played the paternalistic role of Father Knows Best. As long as they thought it was good, it was.

This led to the secretive meetings with Dick Cheney and the energy executives in April 2001 that carved up the oil fields of Iraq. It led to the Federal government ignoring the requests from California, a state that did not vote for George Bush, to investigate the energy price hikes that were being levied that led to almost bankrupting the state. The hikes, by the way, that were engineered by Kenny boy from Enron, allies of George W. Bush and Dick Cheney. It led to the bullying corruption of Tom Delay as the Speaker of the House, known as "The Hammer". If you didn't vote, or play by their rules you would soon out of office. It led to lying to the American people about weapons of mass destruction; it led to the outing of a covert CIA operative; it led to falsifying election results in national elections; it led to politicizing the Justice and State Departments leading to the loss of a balanced government; it led to hidden deficits by falsifying the true cost of the false war with Iraq; it led to falsely justifying torture, unlawful detention and imprisonment; and ignoring the tenets of the Constitution of the United States of America.

Most recently it led to the attacks of President Barrack Obama, which started when he was candidate Obama, that he is not an American citizen; that he is a socialist; that he is a communist; that he is a fascist; and that he "pals around with terrorists". The Republican party and their bought and paid for network, Fox, and mouthpieces Limbaugh, Hannity, O'Reilly, mentally unstable Beck and Savage, and functionally illiterate Palin are as anti-American as any terrorist seeking to harm the United States. These people, and the network that supports them, are creating hateful divisions through misrepresentations and outright lies. Unfortunately enough people believe them to make their ignorant, hateful, lying words harmful to the exercise of true democracy in this country.

If I've offended you then use the energy to prove me wrong - not emotionally - through facts. I've served my nation in the Marine Corps and I continue to serve the Federal government now in support of our military members. I know what it means to be a patriot, to support our country, and to support our troops. In my case, it isn't just a punchline delivered for applause. At the same time, I support our Constitution and the Bill of Rights, which means I believe in free speech. I believe we can disagree - but there is no inherent right to lie about the truth.

We do have some journalists who bring out the truth others are trying to suppress. Rachel Maddow on MSNBC is one of them. She finds the truth behind the lies and shares the information so we can be informed, so we can further investigate on our own, so we can make up our own minds. Look at this interview which goes to the heart of framing a message to avoid the truth and create a climate of false fear.

Why Do Repulicans Hate America?

In the last several months, since the start of the Obama Administration, the Republican Old Guard has shown that it is not interested in America, it is interested in being in control of America.

The sad rhetoric led by the voices of Limbaugh, Hannity, O'Reilly, Gingrich, Cheney, Cantor, Boehner, McConnel and the comic Steele is not about improving, making better or even participating in the process of fixing the massive problems left behind by the previous administration. Their case is all about how unsafe, less secure, and undemocratic every decision of this administration is. They seem to want to keep us afraid.

I can only assume these representatives hate America because they consistently talk against this administration and yet consistently spoke for the last administration. These are partisan, bigoted people who represent the worst of America. And, yes, I am afraid. I am afraid that their voice is being heard. I am afraid that people may believe they speak the truth. I am afraid they are continuing to create division instead of working to create union.

America can not rest on the results of the Presidential election, or the current Democratic majority. America must engage in actively keeping our constitutional rights protected, our moral leadership intact, and to not let the lies of the past and present keep us from getting to the truth, getting the truth out and ensuring the rights of all human beings.

Don't tell me we are safer, the facts show we aren't. Don't tell me waterboarding is not torture, the facts show that it is. Don't tell me we needed to invade Iraq to protect America, the facts show that we didn't. Don't tell me all this criticism is justified, the facts show it isn't. Do I think everything the administration is doing is perfect - No, I don't. But unlike the past administration this one is not trying to conceal or deceive.

So Americans, call these haters what they are - they are the true unpatriotic Americans. You can have your religious values, just don't legislate with them. You can have your conservative principles, just admit you supported and blew it for the past eight years.

Let us as Americans conduct an intervention on these voices of hate and division. Shut down the Limbaughs, Hannitys and O'Reillys, and the ask the elected voices of the Republican Party to step down in favor of voices that truly represent the voice of the American people, not the far right. The party of inclusion has cemented it's exclusion to all.

Intelligent Discourse Requires Intelligence!

The political dialogue being fueled in the media shows a lack of journalistic integrity and critical thinking. The media continues to demonstrate it's willingness to be an anecdotal reporter of school yard rumors and taunts without examination or intelligence. I'm not asking anyone to just accept what they hear on any topic by anyone. But I want my commentary to be commentary.

Jamison Foser, the Executive Vice President of Media Matters for America presents this thoughtful commentary:

"For weeks, the news media have been buzzing about earmarks in the recently signed omnibus spending bill. We've been told over and over that the bill is "loaded," "filled," and "stuffed" with earmarks. Since earmarks made up less than 2 percent of the bill's total spending, this is a little like saying Alaska is "filled" with people.

"But John McCain doesn't like earmarks, so that's where the media have focused their attention. (OK, there's more to it than that, but not much.) Unfortunately, they've done so in the most juvenile way possible. Following McCain's lead, the media's assessment of the earmarks consists of nothing more than sarcastically listing them, as though they are self-evidently a waste of money. New York Times columnist Paul Krugman recently described the approach McCain and the Republicans have adopted:

"The intellectual incoherence is stunning. Basically, the political philosophy of the GOP right now seems to consist of snickering at stuff that they think sounds funny. The party of ideas has become the party of Beavis and Butthead.

"And the media have gone right along with it, producing news reports about the spending bill that are no more substantive than an adolescent chortle: Heh, heh, he said "pig waste." Heh.
Consider, for example, the honeybee. If you have watched television news or picked up a newspaper in the past several weeks, you've probably heard about federal funding for honeybees.

"The assault on the honeybee began with the stimulus package, when CNN and other news organizations dutifully repeated GOP attacks on the inclusion of $150 million for "honeybee insurance." Columnist Charles Krauthammer went so far as to call the bill an "abomination" for including the honeybee insurance.

"Now, there are a few things you need to know about the honeybee insurance. First, there was no such funding, according to Los Angeles Times business columnist Michael Hiltzik. Second, if the funding did exist, it would have amounted to somewhere around two one-hundredths of 1 percent of the stimulus package. Third, if the funding existed, it might well have been a wise use of money. We'll come back to that part.

"Having had some success ridiculing bee-related spending in the stimulus, Republicans went back to the well during debate over the omnibus spending bill, attacking the inclusion of $1.7 million in funding for honeybee research. And the news media were quick to join in, eagerly repeating the attacks -- and, in many cases, adopting them as their own.

"This time, the funding the media ridicules does exist. Progress! Still, there are a couple of important points that the national media left out.

"First, the honeybee funding amounted to 0.00041 percent of the bill, or one-half of one penny per American. All earmarks combined represented less than 2 percent of the bill -- crucial facts that were almost never mentioned by the media. Los Angeles Times reporter (and former Laura Bush press secretary) Andrew Malcolm actually defended the media's disproportionate focus on a tiny fraction of spending: "Defenders defensively point out that's 'only' 1 or 2 percent of the total bill. So? To 99.89% of Americans, $7.7 billion is a manure-load of money."

"But that's one of the key purposes of government: paying for things collectively that 99.89 percent of us couldn't afford to pay for individually. Not to mention the fact that in focusing on the 1 or 2 percent of the bill that constitutes a "manure-load of money," Malcolm and his ilk are ignoring the 98 or 99 percent of the bill that constitutes 49 or 99 manure-loads of money. See, when people point out that earmarks make up only 1 or 2 percent of the bill, they aren't saying earmarks don't matter, they're saying earmarks don't matter as much as things that make up a significantly larger part of the bill. Malcolm thinks he's serving as vigilant defender of the public purse; in fact, he's distracting attention from things that really cost money. He fails even on his own questionable terms.

"Back to the honeybees, and to the other point that has been absent from media coverage of earmarks: Honeybees are pretty important. See, humans need food. Without it, we die. And bees not only produce honey, they pollinate all kinds of crops -- onions, cashews, celery, strawberries, beets, broccoli, cabbage, cucumbers, apples ... you get the picture. Honeybees play an important role in our food supply, and our economy. And honeybees have been disappearing at an alarming rate in recent years, for reasons that are not fully known.

"Here's how the state of Pennsylvania described the problem last May:
Agriculture Secretary Dennis Wolff today said the commonwealth will increase funding to continue research on the potentially devastating "Honey Bee Colony Collapse Disorder."
"Honey bees are critical to Pennsylvania agriculture and to our state's economy," said Wolff. "Pollination from the honey bees determines fruit set and increases fruit quality at an estimated value of $80 million. We can't afford to be lax in dealing with this problem."

"According to a study by two Cornell University professors, honeybee pollination accounted for $14.6 billion worth of crops annually between 1996 and 1998.

"Honeybee research doesn't sound so funny now, does it?

"Now, you can't expect most Americans to know this. Most Americans don't give much thought to bees beyond hoping they don't get stung by one. And that's fine: The life cycle and migratory patterns of bees, and their resultant effects on avocado and cucumber growth, are fairly obscure subjects. We can't, and shouldn't, expect the typical American to know about or act upon these things. After all, there are a lot of obscure but important things that, as a nation, we need to know about and act upon. We can't know about and act upon them all individually; it's literally impossible.

"That's another of the reasons we have a government: to know about and act upon the things we cannot know about and act upon individually. It's one of the reasons we watch television and read newspapers, too: They have the resources that we lack to learn about important but obscure things, and the ability to educate us. (This is where some defenders -- and critics -- of the news media will remind me that the media's job isn't to educate the public, much as I might wish it was; their job is to make money. To that I say: How's that working out? Maybe it's time to try a more serious approach.)

"Instead, they treat it all like one big joke. Why? Because John McCain told them to -- and the national news media have long served as Ed McMahon to McCain's Johnny Carson. McCain posted a few uninformed wisecracks about earmarks on his Twitter account, and the nation's political reporters unquestioningly repeated his cheap shots verbatim, as though their role in life is to simply bellow "HA! You are correct, sir!" whenever Johnny makes a joke.

"The Washington Post's Dana Milbank, for example, claimed, "It was hard to fault McCain on the merits as he described contents of the $410 billion spending bill," pointing to the honeybee funding as an example. But how would Milbank know? Neither he nor McCain bothered to actually assess the merits. Simply listing "$1.7 million for a honeybee factory in Weslaco, Tex." is not considering the merits. It's pretty much the opposite of considering the merits. But it is as close as Milbank would come.

"Milbank went on to quote McCain: " 'What does that mean?' McCain demanded. 'What does "sustainable Las Vegas" mean?' " That's where a serious journalist would have pointed out that it's John McCain's job to know what "sustainable Las Vegas" means, that he has an entire staff to help him find out, and that a few seconds of online research quickly yields an answer: the funding is for an initiative at UNLV that involves "research on water, energy, health care and transportation challenges facing the city and the region, including Arizona and California" and is modeled on a program based in McCain's own state.

"A serious journalist might even have pointed out that John McCain pays his Senate staff more than the amount of the earmark in question. Might even have asked which is the bigger waste of taxpayer money -- a program designed to help a rapidly growing region meet its energy, health-care, and transportation needs, or a senator who spends more money paying his staff, but doesn't ask them to find out the purpose of the program he is criticizing?
Dana Milbank did none of those things.

"Then there's CNN. The cable channel has cited the honeybee funding several times, never bothering to explain it. Last Saturday, for example, CNN's Josh Levs offered examples of earmarks in the bill -- John McCain's examples, of course: "Take a look. John McCain named some. We're going to show you some examples, $1.7 million for a honeybee factory in Texas, another $1.7 million for pig odor research in Iowa. There's a million dollars in there for cricket control in Utah."

"Then four days later, Levs was back on the air -- and again talking about honeybees and crickets. Asked directly about the cricket control, Levs answered, "Maybe people there have problems with crickets."

"Poor Levs, four days after his first report, he was still talking about those crickets -- and still didn't have a clue. I know the nation's newsrooms are facing cutbacks, but they still have Google at CNN, don't they? Type Utah cricket control into the online search engine and the second result is a U.S. Geological Survey report that begins, "Grasshopper and Mormon cricket (Orthoptera) populations periodically build to extremely high numbers and can cause significant economic damage in rangelands and agricultural fields of the Great Plains and Intermountain West."

"If you doubt that the news media have been playing Butt-head to the GOP's Beavis, just watch this video of MSNBC's Norah O'Donnell interviewing Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle, a Democrat. Here's O'Donnell describing the stimulus bill:

"O'DONNELL: It is filled with pork. ... Six-point-six million dollars for termite research. Two-point-two million dollars for the center for grape genetics. One-point-eight million dollars for pig-odor research in Iowa? I mean, come on, Governor. I know you're not in Congress, but this has got to make governors like you mad. You think the people in your state want to pay for $108 million [sic] in taxpayer money going to pig-odor research?

"You really have to watch the video to hear how O'Donnell's voice is just dripping with scorn. She doesn't spend so much as a second assessing, or asking about, the merits of the programs. Instead, she just dramatically emphasizes the words "pig-odor research." Heh. Heh. Federal funding to study pig crap! Heh. Heh.

"Then Doyle explained that pig odor is actually a pretty big problem for Midwestern agricultural states like his, at which point O'Donnell pretended that her objection all along had been the way the funding came to be -- via earmark -- rather than what it was for. Bull. If her objection had been with the funding mechanism, there would have been no reason to mention what the funding was for, certainly no reason to do so sarcastically. She wasn't commenting on the mechanism, she was behaving like a 12-year-old -- and not a particularly mature 12-year-old, either.

"Now, I don't know if the honeybee funding or the cricket funding or the pig-odor research or any of the other earmarks are good ways to spend federal funds. Maybe they're well-run, effective programs that meet an important need, and maybe they aren't. What I do know is that simply cracking jokes about crickets and bees and pig waste rather than taking even 20 seconds to determine what the funding is intended to do is a spectacularly bad way to find out.

"America faces great challenges. We are unlikely to meet those challenges through deliberate stupidity."

An Open Letter to President Obama About the Republicans (From a Former Republican)

"Dear President Obama: I know that from time to time you read Huffington Post because you've written for it. As a Huffington Post reader you'll know that no one on this web site has more faithfully supported your candidacy and now your presidency than me. As a former lifelong Republican, son of a co-founder of the Religious Right; my late evangelical leader father, Francis Schaeffer, I'm in a unique position to tell you a few things about the Republicans from inside perspective. (As you know I left that movement in the mid 1980s.)

"The lack of cooperation you're getting from the Republican Party will continue. You were right to indulge in a little bit of tokenism when you had Pastor Rick Warren pray at your inauguration. But if you think that the Republicans in Congress and the Senate are going to do more than their utmost to obstruct everything you are and what you stand for you're dreaming.

"As someone who appeared numerous times on the 700 Club with Pat Robertson, as someone for whom Jerry Falwell used to send his private jet to bring me to speak at his college, as an author who had James Dobson giveaway 150,000 copies of my one of my fundamentalist "books" allow me to explain something: the Republican Party is controlled by two ideological groups. First, is the Religious Right. Second, are the neoconservatives. Both groups share one thing in common: they are driven by fear and paranoia. Between them there is no Republican "center" for you to appeal to, just two versions of hate-filled extremes.

"The Religious Right supply the kind of people who at McCain and Palin rallies were yelling things such as "kill him" about you. That's the constituency to which your hand was extended when looking for compromise on your financial bailout bill.

"There's only one thing that makes sense for you now. Mr. President, you need to forget a bipartisan approach and get on with the business of governing by winning each battle. You will never be able to work with the Republicans because they hate you. Believe me, Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter are the norm not the exception. James Dobson and the rest are praying for you to fail. The neoconservatives are gnashing their teeth and waiting for you to "sell out Israel" or "show weakness" in Afghanistan, whatever, so they can declare you a traitor.

"The problem is that when you deal with the Republican Party you're talking to the polished characters in Washington. I wish you could see the hate e-mail's that I have received over the last two years because I supported you, letters calling for God to kill me, telling me that I hate God because I supported you and that I am "an abortionist" and worse a "fag lover" because I've written that I believe that you will be a great president.

"What those senators and congressmen are telling you is not what their rabid core constituents are telling them. Their loyalty is to a fundamentalist Christian ideology on the one hand and American exceptionalism of perpetual warfare and hatred and fear of the "other" on the other hand. Between the neoconservatives and evangelical Religious Right Republicans you have no friends.

"The good news is that most Americans support you. And if you will just get in the face of the Republican Party and call their bluff you'll be surprised how many individual ordinary Republicans will support you, not to mention the rest of us. America is sick of the Republicans.

"The Democratic Party won for a reason: the Republicans failed and have taken us all down with them! You're doing your presidency and America no favor by extending an open hand to the perpetually knotted fist of what has become the embittered lunatic fringe of our country. They would rather go down in flames than "compromise" their ideology.

"As you showed us again at your press conference of Feb 9, you are a brilliant, articulate and decent man. Your Republican opponents are not decent people but ideologues bent on destroying you. To quote the biblical adage sir, don't cast your pearls before swine."

Is the world a better place?

We face this new year with optimism. Many, throughout the world, are relieved that the reign of the Bush administration is over. But is it?

We got into our current situation through passive non-involvement. We sat by allowing our rights to be compromised. At the same time we attempted to smother dissent by claiming that those who disagreed with the administration were cowards, or unpatriotic, or socialists, or liberals, or some other term intended to demean the position.

In this new world of the Obama administration we still hear Fox pundits, most notably the likes of Bill O'Reilly and Shaun Hannity, as well as others such as Rush Limbaugh and Karen Hughes, deride the desire of the American people and the world community for change from the constrictive, exclusionary policies of the past.

We hear these same luminaries claim they are keeping watch on this administration. That is sad. After all they did not keep watch on the last administration and assisted in perpetuating the lies and lack of ethical conduct that is the historical legacy of the Bush administration.

If Karen Hughes, Rush Limbaugh and Shaun Hannity are upset that 1.9 million people present for the Obama inauguration spontaneously booed President Bush they need to recognize this is an outcome of his administration. The same administration they supported by misrepresenting truth. The same administration they supported by spouting talking points. The same administration they supported by suppressing dissent. The same administration they supported by claiming they had the only right answers and all others were wrong.

What do the boos represent? They represent the people speaking out. They represent the end of suppression of differences. They represent the end of constrictive U.S. national and international policies. They represent the people taking back their government.

As we go forward I hope the people will make a list of the TRUE legacy of the Bush administration so that we can stop the pundit pedantry that sells lies to the American people. The 9/11 attack that came nine months into the current administration after being warned for months by intelligence reports;, the spending of the complete government surplus they inherited BEFORE the 9/11 attacks; the cherry picking and manufacture of intelligence to attack Iraq for connection to 9/11 when no connection existed; the government incompetence and intention that lead to the destruction of New Orleans; the de-regulations of the financial markets that lead to the current economic crisis; the failure to accept responsibility for any of the actions that morally, ethically and financially bankrupted this country; the use of restrictive religious beliefs to create government policy or to staff critical federal positions.

As we move forward over the next 8 years it is time to accept, to tolerate, to love, to honor, and if at the same time we disagree that is fine but let us disagree on positions or points and not hold to political or religious positions that restrict dialogue.

America is not a center right nation as conservative pundits like to claim. America is a nation of people who have views on different issues. Each issue presents a different view, a different issue. I hope in the future I will no longer hear some one believing they have the only opinion on a point claim that the facts are revisionist, and a non-restrictive view is a liberal view, as an implication the view is of no value.

The current age calls for us to be the highest and best of who we can be, not the close minded, exclusionary failures of our immediate past and current Fox network.

Obama is "The One"

When John McCain produced his video on his web site attempting to appeal to Evangelicals claiming that Obama was "The One" I objected.

I objected on the grounds that he was creating a perception that electing Obama is the beginning of the Apocalypse. Biblical scholars recognize that the Book of Revelations was written contemporaneously. In other words it was meant to be read and applied in the time it was written, not for a future or later time. Early Christians believed they were part of the end of the world and would reunite with Jesus.

However, my biblical studies aside, my objection to the implications and patronizing use of evangelical meaning to libel someone which I consider below classless and vile, now I must rethink my position since the following documentary has surfaced:

Let's stop lying to ourselves. Let's stop accepting lies from our elected officials. It's time for truth - and humor often points it out best. Barrack Obama may not be Moses but he has more integrity than someone who claims he will not be negative and then attacks the character and intergrity of someone else.

Now is the time to Transform. Be the Shaman - Be the Alchemist. Oh, and remember to laugh.

Demand Truth not Spin from the Media!!!!

A wonderful post from Media Matters that needs to be shared for all thinking people to consider:

Obama coverage finds dark lining around silver clouds

Looking at recent media coverage of Sen. Barack Obama, it's hard not to be a bit amused at the contortions reporters have gone through to portray the Democratic presidential candidate in a negative light. News organizations that know Sen. John McCain's campaign is lying about Obama adopt those lies as the framework for their coverage. Reports on campaign polling obsess over Obama's inability to garner the support of more than 50 percent of the public -- all the while McCain struggles to stay above 40. And, increasingly, reporters and pundits have taken to describing Obama's seemingly positive qualities as fraught with electoral peril.

None of this is particularly surprising. Two years ago, I wrote:

No matter who emerges as a progressive leader, or a high-profile Democrat, they're in for the same flood of conservative misinformation in the media. Too many people chalk up outrageous media treatment of, say, Al Gore or John Kerry to the men's own flaws, pretending that if they were better candidates, they'd have gotten better press coverage. That's naïve. The Democratic Party could nominate Superman to be their next presidential candidate, and two things would happen: conservatives would smear him, and the media would join in.

The eagerness with which the media have spread some truly bizarre criticisms of Obama confirms this theory. Just think about some of the things Obama has seen the media portray as weaknesses. He's too popular and respected. He's too well-educated. His great speeches are attended by many enthusiastic people -- just like Hitler! He's too fit.

Yes: The Wall Street Journal would have you believe that Barack Obama faces an uphill electoral climb because he may be "Too Fit to Be President." Journal reporter Amy Chozick devoted more than 1,300 words to exploring this pressing topic:

[I]n a nation in which 66% of the voting-age population is overweight and 32% is obese, could Sen. Obama's skinniness be a liability? Despite his visits to waffle houses, ice-cream parlors and greasy-spoon diners around the country, his slim physique just might have some Americans wondering whether he is truly like them.

Just for good measure, the Journal included a graphic depicting Obama, McCain, and five presidents. For four of the five presidents, along with McCain, the Journal respectfully chose photos in which the men were wearing suits (though Taft was without his jacket.) In the photo the Journal chose for Bill Clinton, he was in mid-jog, in shorts, T-shirt, and a baseball cap; Obama was in exercise garb, with a basketball in his hand.

Chozick apparently had some trouble finding people to support the crackpot premise that Obama's physical fitness might cause voters to question his fitness for office, so she turned to trolling Internet message boards in desperate search of someone -- anyone -- she could quote. As the blog Sadly, No! revealed, Chozick posted a Yahoo! Message Board thread on July 15, asking, "Does anyone out there think Barack Obama is too thin to be president? Anyone having a hard time relating to him and his 'no excess body fat'? Please let me know. Thanks!"

About three-and-a-half hours later, Chozick got her first response -- a post ridiculing her for her focus on "totally meaningless drivel." Nearly an hour after that, Chozick finally got the response she was looking for. A user posting under the name "onlinebeerbellygirl" wrote, "Yes I think He [sic] is to [sic] skinny to be President. ... I won't vote for any beanpole guy." Chozick quoted the post in her article -- one of only two quotes agreeing with the premise of the article. She did not, however, disclose that the quote had come only after she started a thread encouraging people to make such comments. After she got caught, the Journal acknowledged: "The article should have disclosed that the reporter used the bulletin board to elicit the comment."

There may be more to it than that. A post in a subsequent Yahoo! Message Board discussion thread devoted to Chozick's article noted that "[n]either Chozick nor 'onlinebeerbellygirl' has made any other posts on Yahoo before or since, and both profiles appear to have been created on 7/15, the day Chozick started the topics. It certainly looks like Amy Chozick constructed the whole thing."

Another post wondered: "Do WSJ reporters make up fake IDs and make up fake quotes?"

Chozick's original thread has been deleted (a cached copy is available here). Even more curiously, a search of the Yahoo! message boards for "onlinebeerbellygirl" comes up empty. Whether "onlinebeerbellygirl" ever really existed at all or was a Chozick invention, running a 1,300-word article suggesting Obama is too skinny to be president, based upon a random Internet message board post, is insane. As Slate.com's Tim Noah noted, "In the vastness of cyberspace, you can always find somebody who will say whatever you want."

You might think that The Wall Street Journal's speculation that Obama's failure to be overweight might cost him the presidency was so inane and baseless that no other journalist could possibly repeat this nonsense. You might think that, if you haven't been reading Maureen Dowd. Sure enough, Dowd raced to quote the Journal article in her Sunday New York Times column:

In The Wall Street Journal, Amy Chozick wrote that Hillary supporters -- who loved their heroine's admission that she was on Weight Watchers -- were put off by Obama's svelte, zero-body-fat figure.

"He needs to put some meat on his bones," said Diana Koenig, a 42-year-old Texas housewife. Another Clinton voter sniffed on a Yahoo message board: "I won't vote for any beanpole guy."
It's a good thing The New York Times keeps Maureen Dowd around. How else would their readers be exposed to crackpot theories found in ethically questionable Wall Street Journal articles?

But the most cynical assault on Obama has been the suggestion that he's "too presidential." That's what much of the media criticism of Obama's recent trip abroad boiled down to, James Rainey explained in the Los Angeles Times:

The candidate's crowning demonstrations of hubris, according to those building a case, came during his extended trip to Iraq, Afghanistan, the Middle East and Europe. Recall the pundits demanding the freshman Illinois senator prove he could be presidential in the foreign arena?

So he appeared at ease with world leaders, talked animatedly with beaming American troops and drew huge civilian crowds. Then the pundits -- who had been taking a round of bashing for supposedly going easy on Obama -- told Obama he needed to beware of appearing too presidential.

What makes this criticism so distasteful is that throughout the primaries, the media kept saying various candidates looked "presidential" or "like a president." The pundits rarely explained what it means to "look[] like a president," but those candidates had at least two things in common: They were white, and they were men. I don't remember Barack Obama (or Hillary Clinton) being described that way. So, after excluding Barack Obama from their lists of candidates who "look presidential," the media have moved on to suggesting he looks too presidential.

Too popular. Too well-educated. Too fit. Too presidential. The guy doesn't stand a chance. No wonder media coverage of poll results that show Obama beating McCain makes it sound like McCain is winning."

It's a sad day when the Free Press is bought and paid for by a corrupt administration and a corporate media interested in profit margins.

You Can't Fight a War against an Emotion

The U.S. consistently engages in testosterone laden initiatives such as War on Poverty, War on Drugs and for the last seven years, the War on Terror.

What the hell is terror? It's an emotion, as the Oxford dictionary defines it, "extreme fear". It also cites that it's "a person or thing that causes terror". At it's heart terror is what you feel, and each of us feels terror at different levels.

We're fighting a war against a feeling. You can not win a war against a feeling. You have to define what you're fighting and what your objectives are.

Any one who actually believes John McCain has any idea what we're fighting or what our objectives are is as deluded as the conservative spin masters who coined the phrase "War on Terror".

Wake up America! Our danger is not terrorists, our danger is our complacency to believe what we're being told by the corporate media; being told by this rogue administration; and being sold by the Republican talking heads and John McCain.

The people selling you this position do not love this country; they love themselves; they love their group; they love their clique; they love their wealth more than they love this country. I believe in what our Founding Fathers wrote. I believe in what our Nation stood for (past tense is intentional). I wore the uniform of this country for 21 years and I've never let go of my oath to "support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies foreign and domestic."

I want the United States of America back. I want the rights of the individual preserved and protected. I want America to be the leader in human and individual rights not the denier of rights, the torturer of individuals based on association, the invader of sovereign nations, and the builder of corporate pocketbooks at the expense of the people.

Up with America, Down with the anti-American Administration.

This is your America, take it back, get mad, take action, speak out, and deny the lying corporate media their false reporting - demand truth, demand accountability.

Freedom's Just Another Word for Nothing Left to Lose

We've just returned from two weeks in the Valley Isle of Maui. The warm ocean currents, the afternoon breezes, the sun, the sound of waves breaking along the shore guiding us to sleep at night.

What a wonderful, restful world. What a beautiful paradise Hawaii is.

The sad part of any vacation is returning to the world we left behind. The familiar is comforting, the familiar is also the reason we need to take breaks, to take vacations.

For the past two days I've been catching up on the world news I missed. My review of blogs, video clips, and news sites reminded me what I was able to ignore during my two week hiatus, there is still much work to do.

To use the refrain from the current administration, our world has not been the same since 9/11. The American people have come to accept falsehoods and half-truths as truth. Often without questioning or challenging those who state them.

At the same time using the same falsehoods and half-truths the American people want to assassinate those who challenge the administration. We saw that with the Swift-boating of John Kerry - which some conservatives still claim was fact based even though it has been shown to be false. We still see it with e-mails and statements that Barrack Obama is Muslim, which has been shown to be false.

These attacks are intended to question the integrity of the person. In John Kerry's case he supposedly created his own purple heart award - even though the members of his crew attested to everything in his record. In Barrack Obama's case his religion is meant to inspire fear in us that if he's a Muslim he may be a hidden terrorist, after all Muslims are all terrorists (that is sarcasm)!

I'm tired of the world that is so full of lies that well-meaning people buy the hatred of Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, Michael Savage, and Ann Coulter among others. These people are not true or patriotic Americans. They are vile, hate-filled people who make their living by telling everyone there is only one way to think, one way to vote, one way to believe and that anyone who doesn't think, vote or believe what they say is dumb, stupid, unpatriotic, a terrorist lover, or a liberal commie.

I'm tired of hatred. I'm tired of people who try to make others afraid while claiming they love America. To love America is to honor her diversity. To love America is to honor our right to believe what we choose to believe. To love America is to honor our right to worship Jesus, Buddha, Muhammad, Yahweh without question. To love America is to know our greatness comes in the multi-cultural environment that offers opportunities for education, health care, and a better way of life.

I love America. I served 21 years in the U.S. Marine Corps. I continue to work for the betterment of our Nation. I love America, and I am angered at the criminals in the administration and the unfair and unbalanced coverage on the Faux News Network that sells fear, lies and propaganda to people who don't have enough time or desire to seek out the truth.

In honor of the over 4,100 U.S Servicemen and women who have been killed, unnecessarily in the war for oil in Iraq, and the over 100,000 Iraqi deaths as a result of our invasion of a sovereign nation I offer this video compilation of the misstatements and lies by this rogue administration that must not be forgotten. Sons and daughters have died because of these lies - we can not just brush it aside as if it was a misunderstanding. We honor the dead by remembering and holding accountable those who brought us to this situation.

This compilation is caustic and not for the faint of heart. While I didn't make it I honor it for what it demands - truth and accountability.

I wish I could just go back to Maui and forget.

Are You Willing to Admit They Lied?

Over the past two years the rhetoric has shifted from "bad intelligence" to we were "misled". Ladies and gentlemen, they lied. Our vaunted elected officials lied to us and used a propaganda machine to reinforce the lies.

It has been shown that Dick Cheney's office would leak information to the New York Times or Washington Post then that weekend the administration officials; Cheney, Rice; Powell; Rove; as well as various Republican Senators and Congressmen, would hit the news channels and refer to the article in the Times or Post as if it were independent confirmation of what the administration knew. No one has mastered state controlled media as well since Germany in the 1930's.

Now we know they lied. Now we know the agenda was set in February 2001 (by the way this is before 9/11). Now we know we have made the world less safe.

We've started a War of Aggression under the purported premise of Weapons of Mass Destruction, which became the capture of a tyrannical dictator, which became the spread of democracy, which became the spread of freedom in the Middle East. We've even said god was on our side and this was a war against the godless.

Now we are entering the final phases of our primary year, the Republicans have crowned the battle weary John McCain, and the Democrats are still fighting between the divisive Hilary Clinton and the enthusiasm and hope of Barack Obama.

Yet we continue to hear the hateful, hate-filled rhetoric of Bill O'Reilly, Hannity, assorted toady Fox pundits, Michael Savage, Rush Limbaugh, and others who seem to be purveyors of sociopathic misinformation, disinformation, and out right lies.

Couple this with the general lack of spine demonstrated by the Democratic members of Congress who are complicit in not holding the administration accountable for "high crimes and misdemeanors". The Republicans could barely count their glee as they drafted Articles of Impeachment against Elliot Spitzer, Governor of New York for his use of a high class prostitution service, and Republicans tied up the country in the impeachment of Bill Clinton for having oral sex with an intern in the Oval Office.

Yet, falsifying intelligence (http://www.thenation.com/doc/20051121/scheer1105), lying to the American public in building their case for war in Iraq (http://www.truthout.org/docs_03/070903A.shtml), invading a sovereign nation, and leaving our country over 9 trillion in debt (your share is over $30,000 http://brillig.com/debt_clock/) don't seem to be strong enough grounds for instituting impeachment proceedings against Bush, and Cheney.

A complicit Department of Defense, Department of State, and Justice Department also need to be held accountable. Accountable for failing to live up to the Constitution of the United States which charges them to establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty for ourselves and our posterity.

Dante said, "The hottest places in hell are reserved for those who, in a period of great moral crisis, maintain their neutrality." As a 21 year veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, as a conslutant who supports the welfare and benefits of our military Service members and their family members I have been called unpatriotic, mistaken, and deluded. But, truthfully, I am afraid:

...not of terrorists.
...not of attacks against the U.S.
...not of Muslim extremists who might want to target Americans or the U.S.

I am afraid of the United States losing it's identity to a religious or conservative ethic that is not moral because it does not use truth as it's foundation. It uses the belief that the true believers know better and the rest of us just need to go along.

Like fundamentalist Christians who are waiting for the rapture Apocalypse, I, too, am waiting for an Apocalypse. True bibilical scholars would point out that the apocalyptic vision from the New Testament Book of Revelations was about the time of Rome and Nero, not a future battle in the Middle East, not a time for rewarding those who held to their beliefs of Jesus as the Christ.

But there is one Apocalyse I look forward to seeing. Apocalypse comes from the Greek apocalypsus which means the uncovered, revealing or unveiling. I look forward to the Uncovering, the Revealing, the Unveiling. I look forward to the moment when those who did the most damage to the best of our nation...

our legislating for the people
our leading for the people
our role modelling of individual freedoms and rights
and our rights of the defendants

...become caught in the web of their own deception.

Freedom is earned - rights are earned - have you earned your rights today? If not, there is someone listening, watching and administerating who is willing to take your rights away. Don't let them - stand up - be counted - show your spine - unveil - reveal - be a true patriot.

This year Vote for a True Change - not a repaint of the past. Let's reclaim our country. Until it's time for your vote to be counted, take action, read, discuss, inform, spread the word.

Don't place your reservation for the hottest places in hell, place your reservation to be one of those who reclaimed the United States of America as the multi-cultural, multi-dimensional demonstration of personal and indvidual rights, responsibility and freedom for all.

When Did You Choose to Give Up Your Rights?

Remember the mantra, "Everything has changed since 9/11,"? What's changed?

Perhaps our willingness to protect our civil liberties and rights. Perhaps our tolerance of illegal activity from our "elected" officials. Perhaps our desire to just be "protected" and trusting those in power to do it without needing to know the details.

I can't speak for you, but I believe we are losing out national soul and our national identity. You are being spied upon, you are being lied to, you are being deliberately mislead.

I am a 21 year verteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and I can state unequivocably - speaking against the administration does not "embolden the enemy", or "endanger the troops". Speaking against the administration, the President, the Commander in Chief does not show a lack of support for our Servicemen and women serving in harm's way.

One thing is correct, 9/11 did change everything because it changed our bullshit meter so that we accept more bullshit then move on to buy another SUV.

Wake up America! Our nation is in grave danger and it is not in danger from those in the deserts of Iraq or Afghanistan. We are in danger here at home and the primary location of that danger is Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington DC.

Our 4th President and a critical framer of our Constitution, James Madison warned us to beware slow gradual erosion of our rights: “I believe there are more instances of the abridgement of freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachments by those in power than by violent and sudden usurpations.... The means of defense against foreign danger historically have become the instruments of tyranny at home.”

The Season to Give

In this season we hear consistently about the meaning of the season, a meaning we seem to confuse with the Paulist Christians movement of the March birth of Jesus to December to replace the Roman celebration of the Winter Solistice.

That piece of information aside, the apparent meaning of this made up Christian celebraton is the Peace and Good Will toward everyone. If we have Peace and Good Will toward everyone, if this is supposed to be a Christian virtue, why, why do we mouth hate toward so many - so many cultures, so many beliefs, so many practices.

In this season of giving we're asking everyone to give - give a moment to learn about a culture, belief or religion that you don't already know about it.

Learn something about those who are different than you because learning leads to dialogue, dialogue leads to understanding, and understanding can lead to real peace. A peace that isn't based on military might but the true peace of acceptance, understanding and mutual respect.

In this season of understanding, as I've now named it, take time to read alternative information. If you use reason you would recognize that our Iraq strategy can never be improved because underneath it all we still invaded a sovereign nation under false pretenses.

No justification of what has occurred is of value because the foundation of why we're there is false. It isn't democracy, it isn't spreading freedom, it isn't to fight the previous Al Qaeda stronghold - they are strong there now because of our invasion. It's unfortunate that we still see information defending what we're doing and we fail to remind ourselves in every discussion that we're fighting a war to support an industrial direction.

If we have the truthful discussion we might have a real solution, but we don't have the truthful discussion so we debate the solution to the lies.

This season, learn, read, understand that which you rejected before. Start learning to understand instead of being understood.

Consciousness Requires Consciousness

Kyralani and I meet many different people in various levels of awakening, or degrees of consciousness. What we notice is that often people know the words but don't know the music.

Now this isn't written from a sense of judgment, it's written from a sense of observation and even self-examination. How many of us have heard that we have to feel before we can manifest? How many of us learn the mantra's from the latest buzz of self-help or new age phrasing?

There is one mantra that would be helpful for all of us to remember: trying means doing. Often Kyralani and I hear people say they are trying something but they aren't receiving a response, or even getting a result. The reason for this is simple, they aren't doing, they're trying.

In the "Book of the Five Rings", master Samurai Miyamoto Musashi reflects on his life. He fought over sixty swordsmen from the age of thirteen to thirty, then from the age of thirty to fifty he became a craftsman and painter and his reflections on his life became this book. At fifty he published his book about his philosophy called Heiho, a philosophy about what it takes to develop the right attititude, the right outlook to be successful. Success is not the goal, the goal is the correct application of Heiho.

Miyamoto Musashi compares Zen to the skills of sword fighting and shows how success in any goal is based on the same principles. There are two points from this masteful work of Zen that I want to share:

To win against one's opponent is the same as winning against thousands or tens of thousands of opponents.
To practice something the same way all the time is a must. To practice a technique half-heartedly builds bad habits. Dishonesty to oneself is bad discipline.

When we apply a technique, or practice a technique we have to be brutally honest with ourselves. We can't just "try". As Yoda, Jedi Master from Star Wars, told us: "Don't Try, Do!"

As you journey your path, be honest with yourself, share honestly with others, and be informed. Don't just try, Do. Keep doing until you find how to create the results you desire.

In Zen it's believed that we return to an earthly embodiment until we reach a state of enlightenment, then this becomes our last life. This means our journey is about the learning, the knowing, not the doing. So in your journey seek to know, seek to understand, don't seek to succeed, seek only to journey. There are small elements, there are minor miracles, there is true magic in the journey. And Kyralani and I always look for the magic.

There is only one Truth!

In the last six years we've seen a shift in U.S. consciousness. Yesterday I had a discussion with someone who has views that are different than mine about U.S. policy, the War in Iraq, President Bush, and even the U.S. political environment. The conversation was polite and non-contentious. The conversation grew out of a question about "God's Politics" by Jim Wallis.

Mr. Wallis, a part-time professor at the Kennedy School of Communication at Harvard, and a full-time Christian minister is concerned that our national debate about moral issues has been defined as two items: abortion and gay marriage. He feels that true Christ-like concern about moral issues should reflect items that Christ spoke about: aid to the poor, healthcare, and education to name a few.

In the 2004 election, although not taking political sides, Mr. Wallis indicated that John Kerry addressed the moral issues raised by Christ, but President Bush only addressed abortion and gay marriage and the spin machine made those the centerpiece of the morals debate.

The person I was talking with, we'll call him John, immediately responded like the well-trained pundits from Fox News with the statement that you can't trust extremists from the right or the left. Since the moral debate about abortion and gay rights was a primary issue of the Republican agenda in 2004, not from an extreme side, I realized that John was moving into immediate damage control on behalf of his belief system, framed by the circular logic of the "red state" positioning of the Republican strategists.

I countered by stating, that extremism is defined by the filter of each person, so extemism is not a static position or opinion. It can only be defined by the person speaking so it isn't a particular issue that everyone would agree is extreme left or right.

Needless to say, this dialogue continued for some time in this vein. I would neither concede, nor defend any position. In addition, John brought up the "left's demonization of Republican's" which I mentioned is strictly a non-factual position stated repeatedly by the conservative radio show and Fox News pundits because they claim that anyone who does not support whatever position is the flavor of the week is not-patriotic. Even John did not counter this position, he just changed the subject.

The issue for all of us as U.S. citizens to consider is this: in a time of diminishing personal rights, the transtion of what we used to call news into propaganda machines, continued misrepresentation and lies from our elected officials, the politicization of religion, the overt integration of religion into our political process, and the failure to hold anyone accountable for the choices and actions that have led us to this situation, what do you want from your government? What can we as U.S. citizens claim as our strengths, our gifts?

We are wiretapped, our newspapers are propaganda machines that stifle dissenting opinions, our news channels are propaganda machines that take bad news information from each other and spread it around. Our national psyche is mis-lead, mis-represented and our personal libeties are at risk.

I don't know about you, but I want my Bill of Rights. I want my democratic principles. I want my government of representation.

The Saga Continues!

Yesterday I saw a headline from the Associated Press: "Bush: Giving Surge Time Will Bring Troops Home Faster". The current administration reminds me of the Mad Hatter tea party in Alice in Wonderland.

Let's see, here are two choices: bring the troops home, or continue the surge to bring the troops home faster! Sounds like the reverse logic we've come to expect from this rogue administration.

I try to present non-political items that we can use to guide and improve our lives, but this is beyond reasonability. We can't be free if we don't embrace freedom. We can't be true, if we don't insist on truth. We can't have integrity if we don't model and operate from a foundation of integrity.

We have a rogue administration that defies the will of the people, the rule of law and its responsibility to defend and support the Constitution of the United States from all enemies foreign and domestic. To me, they have become the domestic enemy.

We have an administration that has deliberately co-opted the Justice Department so that it is a politically operating entity, not the independent department it at least it supposed to attempt to be. We have an Attorney General who can't remember what he remembers but he knows he made the decision.

We have the White House ordering it's appointees to defy Congressional subpoenas, and before someone launches into Executive Privilege - that privilege has always been extended directly to the President, not every minion who worked for him. In addition we have Cheney claiming Executive Privilege when he is asked whom he met with on those mysterious energy council meetings that resulted in almost bankrupting California through energy price kiting, yet when it comes to the oversight required of the Executive Agencies to report on the handling of classified material the Vice President claims he isn't required to report because he is not part of the Executive Offices.

But that isn't all! We've become so accustomed to wanting someone else to fix things for us that we ignore the obvious. How about the consistent reports of mishandling the information leading up to the attacks of September 11, 2001, or the mishandling of the war planning and execution - which Bush is now pushing fully on Tommy Franks as the first commander in Iraq, or even the continued mishandling and lying about conditions in Iraq. Each time one of these mini-bombs erupts in the news we suddenly get inundated with massive news about terror alerts and impending doom. In addition, the Administration is just plain lying. The US is building and expanding over 20 permanent bases in Iraq, mostly in the Western regions. We are not in Iraq to bring Iraqis democracy, any more than we are in Iraq to capture Weapons of Mass Destruction. We're in Iraq to maintain a physical presence in the region and allow ready access to the oil for U.S. companies.

So let's separate the wheat and the chaff. True conservatives would not be in this war, and neither would true democrats. We, the we being the American people, have allowed blind faith and evangelicism to drive us to a country bankrupting itself on a war on morally bankrupt reasons fed by repeatedly reinforced fears.

Is Al Qaida in Iraq - they are NOW. They were not before.

Is Iraq a terrorist training ground - it is NOW. It was not before.

By the way where is the safe haven for Al Qaida - oh, that's right it's in Pakistan our ALLY!

Have we created a blanket of freedom for the people of Iraq? NO. Were they free before - NO! But at least they could shop, earn a living, they had lights, power, water, heat. We've shown ourselves to be the bully in the school yard who just wants your lunch money because he can prey on your fear to get it.

This administration defies Congressional oversight, lies to the American people about it's policies, and then acts as if they know best what to do. I for one did not serve for 21 years in the U.S. Marine Corps to watch the best of what our nation offers in terms of liberty, freedoms and governmental checks and balances be destroyed by draft dodging, privilege protected incompetents who can not articulate a cogent position based on real facts.

This administration says it listens to the American people and it does the complete opposite of what the American people want. In addition, it's been claimed that Bush suffers from a disassociate condition. What that means is you or I would see the wounded or dead Service people who have fought in Iraq and might say how can we end this carnage. But when Bush sees it he says this is terrible, this is why we have to go stop the people who are doing this. This matches the rhetoric that spews from the Bush and Cheney.

Ladies and gentlemen, our founding fathers created a government by the people and for the people. It's time the people demanded their government back from those who don't give a damn about people.

You want to know what to do. Write to your Senators and Congressmen. Demand accountability in this administration. If you get your news from Fox News that unfortunately you only get propaganda. Their talk shows and their news are maintained by talking points that are intended to support the administration's position. Journalism is dead in most news networks and newspapers. Question, don't accept, question.

And while you're at it, let's all stop blaming every problem today on what Clinton did or didn't do. The truth is almost everything this administrations does is based on a precedent established by Ronald Reagan who did more to take government oversight out of industry, including dismantling programs for alternative energy sources, control of carbon emissions and other programs directly related to measures intended to help offset global warming. Reagan's administration was a more acceptable version of Nixon's. I don't care if you do or don't like him, I only care that we use REAL facts when talking about these things.

Take back your country today! Love it or Leave it means work on it, make it better, correct what isn't working but don't give up on it. It's yours - claim it!

How Close Are You to Your Dreams?

2007 is halfway done. Let me ask you a question. What have you done today toward your Dream?

Dreams and goals are not the same. Harvey McKay said “A dream is a dream. A goal is a dream with a plan and a deadline.”

While Harvey McKay is correct. It doesn’t mean that we should not have dreams that don’t yet have goals. Our dreams should be big, bigger and biggest.

We have to touch the emotional core of what makes us tick. Master Magician Jeff McBride simplified Harvey McKay’s statement but simply saying, “Goals are dreams with deadlines.”

Every week take 15 minutes, find a quiet place away from phones, children, family, friends, television, radio, iPod, blackberry, and cell phone. Close your eyes and breathe in slowly through your nose, fill your lungs and feel your belly expand. Then breathe out slowly through your mouth. Repeat this 10 times. With each breath in visualize in your mind the golden healing light of divine love and connection. With each breath out feel the weight of your daily responsibilities and worries leaving. Each breath in, love and healing, each breath out expel the heaviness.

As your breath this way your mind will clear of it’s heaviness. In the clearness of your mind create a vision or your future. Don’t see yourself in it, see it from your eyes. See the house, the car, the family, the peace, the comfort, the abundance, the dream. Find the dream that excites you. Find the dream that makes the hair on the back of you neck stand up in anxious excitement, nervousness and anticipation. Then claim that dream.

Make that dream yours. After 15 minutes allow yourself to slowly return to a place of awareness. Now – dream in place – plug into your goal planning.

Write down what it looks like when you achieve your dream. Next, write the steps needed to get you there. Last write a present tense statement that says what it is like being there as if you are already there.

Every night before bed repeat your present tense statement. Next week take your 15 minutes and read your dream, your steps and begin the process again with your breaths. Visualize your dream again – see it – taste it – touch it – feel it. Change the steps if you have to, but the third week is time to actually plan the steps in more detail. To turn your dream into a plan and a goal with a deadline.

How long must this go on?

This has been an accelarated year of movement, growth and change. It doesn't seem that December was my last posting. Time is compressing and accelerating which brings me to my point in writing.

Do you ever feel as if you’re in a never ending merry-go-round. It seems as if you’ve been going past this same spot again, and again, and again.
Have you ever had a series of days when you wish you were riding in the wagon instead of the green pony and you can’t seem to get off the pony and make it back to the wagon?

Life is always ready to test us. It’s the nature of the universe to throw a few speed bumps at us along the way.

Dr. Wayne Dyer tells us, “When life throws curve balls, it’s not our job to complain about curve balls, it’s our job to learn to hit curve balls.”

Have you been doing your batting practice? Or have you been sitting in the dirt by home plate watching the curve balls fly by and wondering how to get on base?

This year seems to be following a pattern of repeats. The work, the stress, the relationships, the lessons. All repeats.

But my real question for 2007 is this: When is honesty threatened by sharing it under oath?

My question comes from the Congressional hearings on the firing of eight U.S. attorneys.

While we know everyone is innocent until proven guilty, we also know these attorneys were fired for political reasons. This last statement is fact.

What is interesting about this case is some of the statements of purported fact issuing from the White House and the Justice Department. For example, if the President needs open and candid dialogue from his advisors, why would that open and candid dialogue prevent open and candid dialogue with Congress and the American people?

Why is only the President entitled to honesty from his advisors, but the American people and Congress are not, so any advice the President received must be withheld from the Congress and the public under the invisible umbrella of Executive Privilege. Some may argue that is not what is being said, but forget the words – that IS what is being said.

This administration has consistently said, “Trust us”, “Don’t ask just Trust us”.

In the American political system the people are intended to be a player. The government is intended to be divided among Executive, Legislative and Justice. The checks and balances are intended to prevent what this administration has actually done – create a shadow government operating outside the will of the people and the legislative branch of government.

I’m saddened that a Justice Department official, Ms. Monica Goodling, can not testify, under oath, to Congress because testifying under oath may require her to commit perjury. What an astonishing statement!

Ms. Goodling is not exhibiting integrity, she’s demonstrating a lack of integrity. She will have to lie if asked by Congress about the firing of the eight federal prosecutors so she’s invoking her rights under Amendment 5 of the Bill of Rights.

What is even more interesting is that Ms. Goodling is a graduate of Pat Robertson’s Regent University. This institution was founded by Robertson “to produce Christian leaders who will make a difference in the world.” So Ms. Goodling, Christian leader, can not testify under oath because she will…a) incriminate herself for participating and taking politically motivated actions in firing federal prosecutors, or …b) she will have to lie to not incriminate herself.

What is going on in this world of ours that anyone would consider this conduct and behavior appropriate! The worst part is the White House and the Justice Department are acting as if her statements and conduct are signs of integrity. They are signs of dogmatic, obsequious allegiance to an ideology blinded by a rigid faith. This administration makes me sad because they are lost and can’t be found.

The United States Constitution asks that our elected officials govern with a sense of purpose for the people of the United States. The President governs by and with the advice of the Senate. He is not “the decider”. He is not the one who “knows what’s best”. He is an elected official who serves at the pleasure of the American people, and the American people are not pleased!

How's the View in the Rearview Mirror?

How did you do with your goals in 2006? Did you write any Goals? Did you just say I want to make a million dollars this year, or did you put a precise goal with steps to take? Did you take those steps, or did you just give up by the end of February because you thought life was getting in the way?

Before attempting to plan 2007, or attempting to not plan 2007, look back over this past year. Let’s take an inventory and see how you did:

Where were you successful?
Where were you NOT successful?
What actions did you take that worked?
What actions did you take that didn’t work?
Did you have more success than planned in a particular area?
Did you have less success than planned in a particular area?

Before you make your List of Goals for 2007 I recommend you make this list, provided by Darren Hardy (President of The Success Training Network):

What was your biggest triumph in 2006?
What was the smartest decision you made in 2006?
What was the greatest lesson you learned in 2006?
What was the most loving service you performed in 2006?
What is your biggest piece of unfinished business in 2006?
What are you most happy about completing in 2006?
What was the biggest risk you took in 2006?
What was the biggest surprise in 2006?
What important relationship improved the most in 2006?
Who were the three people that had the greatest impact on your life in 2006?
What compliment would you liked to have received in 2006?
What compliment would you liked to have given in 2006?
What one word best sums up and describes your 2006 experience?
What else do you need to do or say to be complete with 2006?

Dr. Maxwell Maltz, author of PsychoCybernetics said; “We are built to conquer environments, solve problems, achieve goals, and we find no real satisfaction in life without obstacles to conquer and goals to achieve.”

Too many goals fail because:

They are negative: (I’m going to lose; I will stop; I won’t do). All goals must be in the present positive;
We are not emotionally committed.

So when you look at those items that didn’t succeed in 2006 the questions to ask yourself are:

Were you ready to change?
Where were your Priorities?
What was your Purpose for the Goal?
What were your Dream Starters or Triggers for the Goal?
Where was the support for your Journey?

Look at each of these 5 areas listed below and decide, at the end of 2007 what do you want to list as your accomplishment in each of these areas. This isn’t a list of what you think you should have – or what others think you should have – but what you really want in each of these 5 areas:

Career
Financial
Health
Personal
Social

Tis the Season to Not Let it Get You Down!

I've just completed a cycle of events, all different, all in line with the performances and entertainment I offer.

Last night is notable for two reasons: one, it's fresh in my mind, and two, because it was painful. Based on my marketing I was hired to perform at a company Christmas party at a local hotel. Several things, all verified in advance were not what they were expected to be when I arrived.

The first factor that no one could control was the cold, driving rain that hit the area. It just was what it was. I left extra early so that I could unload and set-up in plenty of time. My performance was scheduled for 6:45 pm. There would be a dance floor for me to set-up and I would go on as they were eating dinner.

When I arrived extra tables had been set-up on the dance floor - so essentially there was no dance floor. My performance time was 7:30 pm and there was no place to set-up.

As part of my performance package I had some material that was placed on each table for the attendees to learn magic effects, and also for later use during the show. I did that set-up and put my case and other materials in a location that was deemed appropriate so I could change clothes and finish my show preparation.

After changing clothes the registration table for the event was moved adjoining my case and other materials. It was necessary to move my equipment to a location further away so I could do the show prep.

Without being too far out of range the nearest and furthest area was across an open bridge area from the hotel to the room. The openness made it vulnerable to the draft and dampness of the cold rain. So my preparation and staging time was spent with the drafty dampness as company. Also, I was able to receive the benefit of the smokers who found the bridge area a convenient place to congregate.

At 7:15 pm the CEO asked me if it would help if they removed the tables from the dance floor since no one was sitting there. I thought that was a great idea; however, only the catering manager was available to do it. This event was a buffet, and the rest of the catering staff were working other events in the hotel. The manager began the process of clearing the tables.

By 7:40 the CEO did his welcome to everyone. Then the DJ did a great job introducing me and I began. While the routining for this event was different, the material is well-worked, and each is a successful piece without the show wrapping.

From my first words the heckling began. From "I like your haircut", to "Seen that done that" to "That was your best one." Without addressing the hecklers I dropped material to keep moving. But it is the worst I've ever experienced. Now, everyone there were really nice people, but it was their party and some of them were determined to have fun on their terms.

After the show I received a lot of strong compliments about how great it was, how good I was etc., etc.. But what stuck with me is the heckling. I admit that I've not figured out a good way to handle or end the heckling in a platform situation. Last night I took the approach of ignoring it as it occurred but it broke into me at every move.

Most of you reading this blog probably don't care about my heckled experience but I share it for a reason. It won't stop me. This is what I do and I do it well. In life all of us have had those moments when something got in the way. Something created an experience we didn't like, or didn't want. But success is based on persistence. Persistence is based on learning and being willing to continue.

Now I am still assessing the show - how could I have structured it differently; how could I have responded differently; what if anything could I have done better, or differently. I won't do it the same necessarily. But I will continue to perform.

So what ever you do this holiday season, or for the New Year. Remember if you believe in you, if you believe in what you're doing, then persistence is the key to success.

Dream, Create, Manifest

Those of you who follow my newsletter or read my blogs know that I've reminded, reminded, reminded everyone that February through June are the months for Dreaming and Creating the Vision of what you want for your life, and July through November are the months for Manifesting those Dreams!

Okay - have you been paying attention? Two things are important in life: one, is to always learn; the second is to share what you've learned with others. At all times, in all ways we are connected. There is no separation. There is no isolation. There is no hermetic withdrawal to a remote cave.

So, what is your Dream? Stop - don't tell me. Don't say it. Write it down. Write it down now!

Now, it's written. What are you doing to move in the direction of that dream? We know with the Power of Attraction if we meditate and feel our Dream we can realize our Dream. We don't need to put together a detailed plan. This is the proverbial Dream written on a napkin.

With your napkin - with the daily feeling of your Dream you've taken the Creation step. Now what are you doing for the Manifestation Step.

Now you're saying - "Hold on, you just said I don't have to put together a detailed plan." That's correct - you don't. But you can't fight against your movement toward your Dream either. If you spend your entire day on the couch watching soap operas then you can't become a best selling author, or what ever your dream is.

So - we're in Manifestation period and in October I'm releasing my CD and workbook The Magic of Making Your Dreams Come True. My goal planning session gives you specific, easy to apply techniques that will take your Dream and alchemist turn your lead into gold. But only if you really want it.

'Fill Your Bucket and Keep Moving'

When you're kind to someone or give them a compliment, it lifts your mood. Authors Tom Rath and Donald Clifton, call being kind to others as "filling your bucket" of positive experiences.

In their book How Full Is Your Bucket (Gallup Press), they say every interaction you have adds to or subtracts from your bucket.

Happiness depends on how full of positive, affirming experiences your bucket is at any given time. Bucket-filling is contagious, the authors say. Your kindness sparks a chain reaction. It makes people you have been kind to want to be kind to others.

To keep your bucket full, they recommend five positive encounters to every negative one.

You can reach that goal by commenting to people about what they do right. Support your friends. Give sincere smiles.

When someone compliments you, pass it on and let the feeling spread. When you're feeling down, or cranky, or unkind, or even the dreaded depressed word then then you can improve your mind set and mood by moving.

* Get outside. Hiking in beautiful surroundings, swimming, biking, or skiing in winter will make you physically and mentally healthier. And you'll burn more calories.

* Walk to the music. Going with the beat is great whether you walk outside or on a treadmill. At East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C., doctors found that men listening to the tunes of their choice upped their speeds and burned more calories but didn't even realize they were working harder.

When you find yourself struggling with multiple things on your mind, or seem unable to focus what you need is an exercise break to clear your mind and stimulate your thought processes.

Writing in Health magazine, psychotherapist Eric Maisel, Ph.D says the exercise benefit he likes best is what Buddhists call the "empty mind." Exercise stills those little voices in your head that keep distracting and criticizing you.

So get moving, clear your mind and practice kindness - you'll feel better about yourself and your life and you'll make someone else's life better in the process.

You are Here!

In the last ten years I’ve been an active participant in Toastmasters International. That means I’ve heard hundreds of speeches and presentations on a multitude of topics.

Two of those hundreds stood out for me: one was called, “One of These Days”; the other was called, “You Are Here!”

In “One of These Days” the speaker developed a 100 year calendar that displayed 100 years on an oversize poster. His point was the average life span was 75 years which meant we have 27,393 days that’s 657,432 hours to accomplish anything we want with our life.

But often we take our Dreams, Hopes and Vision and say, “I’ll do that one of these days.” With his calendar you could pick which day “One of These Days” actually would be.

In the “You Are Here!” presentation the speaker spoke about the dot on the site maps at the mall which state emphatically “You Are Here”. Then he asked us to think about our life and where we are. Just as in the mall we can move the “You Are Here” location by changing where you are. You can change your thoughts, your attitudes, your beliefs and your circumstances.

So I ask you, Where Are You, and on Which Day will you commit to change your life?

We Become What We Think About

In his book "Think and Grow Rich", Napoleon Hill told us that we become what we think about most. It's the same principal shared by Charles Haanel in "The Master Key System" originally published as 24 lessons to be studied with Napoleon Hill's sixteen volume "Law of Success" series.

It's the same principal shared by Orison Swett Marden in his 1910 work, "The Miracle of Right Thought"; the same principal shared by James Allen in his work "As a Man Thinketh" published over 100 years ago; and it's the same principal that has been shared with us by such notables as Earl Nightingale in "The Strangest Secret"; Norman Vincent Peale, "The Power of Positive Thinking"; and most recently in the movie "The Secret" available at www.thesecret.tv.

Why point out all these references to one principal? Because it is the foundational principal of all that we do; all that we choose to do; and all that we want to do. What are you thinking about?

Are your thoughts positive or negative? Do your thoughts bring you dread or joy? Are you straining to make it throught the drudgery of the day or are you working to make your best contribution so you can enjoy time at home with your family? What are your thoughts?

The next level of your thought is that you attract what you think about. Everything in your life is there because you attracted it. Even if it's something you would say you don't want in your life - it's there because you thought about it and brought it in.

Now just because you have negative thoughts doesn't mean you can only have negative things. Present moment positive thoughts are more powerful than most negative thoughts. Dreams = Goals with Deadlines

What have you done today toward your Dream?

Dreams and goals are not the same. Harvey McKay said “A dream is a dream. A goal is a dream with a plan and a deadline.”

While Harvey McKay is correct. It doesn’t mean that you shouldn't have dreams that don’t yet have goals. Your dreams should be big, bigger and biggest.

You have to touch the emotional core of what makes you tick. Master Magician Jeff McBride simplified Harvey McKay’s statement by simply saying, “Goals are dreams with deadlines.”

Every week take 15 minutes, find a quiet place away from phones, children, family, friends, television, radio, iPod, blackberry, and cell phones.

Close your eyes and breathe in slowly through your nose, fill your lungs and feel your belly expand. Then breathe out slowly through your mouth. Repeat this 10 times.

With each breath in - visualize in your mind the golden healing light of divine love and connection. With each breath out - feel the weight of your daily responsibilities and worries leaving. Each breath in, love and healing, each breath out expel the heaviness.

As you breathe this way your mind will clear of it’s heaviness.

In the clearness of your mind create a vision or your future. Don’t see yourself in it, see it from your eyes. See the house, the car, the family, the peace, the comfort, the abundance, the dream.

Find the dream that excites you. Find the dream that makes the hair on the back of you neck stand up in anxious excitement, nervousness and anticipation. Then claim that dream and make it yours.

After 15 minutes allow yourself to slowly return to a place of awareness.

Now – dream in place – plug into your goal planning.

Write down what it looks like when you achieve your dream. Next, write the steps needed to get you there. Lastly write a present tense statement that says what it is like being there as if you are already there.

Every night before bed repeat your present tense statement.

Next week take your 15 minutes and read your dream, your steps and begin the process again with your breaths. Visualize your dream again – see it – taste it – touch it – feel it. Change the steps if you have to, but the third week is time to actually plan the steps in more detail. To turn your dream into a plan and a goal with a deadline.

For now just know that Dreams do come True as long as we take the action to make them real.

Manifestation, Transformation and Belief

In the last month I’ve spent a great deal of time to focus on what I have, what I believe I want to change, which beliefs are limiting me, and which beliefs are not accepted at my heart level. I’ve listened to Vic Johnson, founder of www.AsAManThinketh.net; Dr. Wayne Dyer, metaphysical author, speaker and teacher; I’ve re-read “Think and Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill; and I’ve re-incorporated mediation into my daily activity.

With all that activity what do I expect the outcome to be? Is it just belief without action, or do we need action coupled with belief?

Most of us talk to us throughout the day. Unfortunately 80% of all self-talk is negative. To counter our negative self-talk we have to practice speaking positively to ourselves. We do this by creating affirmations that we say – out loud – to imprint positive, affirming, self-loving thoughts in our mind.

In “The Rapid Manifestation Training Course” author Song Chengxiang teaches that manifestation is about attracting that which is already present, we just have to draw it to ourselves.

First we must change our belief system in order to attract that which will serve and support us. Song Chengxiang shares a positive inner dialogue exercise that he learned from Dr. Deepak Chopra. Every day looking in the mirror repeat silently the following sentences:

1. I am totally independent of the good or bad opinions of others.
2. I am beneath no one.
3. I am fearless in the face of any and all challenges.

These sentences focus on our inner self-worth, letting us know we value ourselves. We use this to replace our inner negative dialogue. Doing the inner work is building a foundation for our house. Often we frame the house without ensuring the foundation is solid.

In his “Can You Believe It?” series, Vic Johnson reminds us that if we repeat the same actions in the same way we will get the same result. We’ve all heard the quote that says repeating everything the same way and expecting a different result is the definition of insanity. But, we can replace that with this thought:

Everyone one of us can find something to improve in our life. Some thought, some pattern, some aspect that we would like to change or improve.
